Adblock vs Adblock Plus Chrome (Google Chrome)

Adblock and Adblock plus (formerly AdThwart) are two very similar chrome extensions (equivalent to firefox addons :D) Now anyone switching from firefox to chrome will surely be wanting to know which is better. The answer? Both are good.

But I prefer adblock plus because it has a massive community behind it from firefox too. So I'd say you use adblock plus. But adblock is good too!

Padmanabhaswamy temple treasure

Padmanabhaswamy temple in trivandrum (thiruvananthapuram) the capital city of Kerala has been receiving a lot of attention because of the multi billion worth treasure trove discovered from the 'nilavara's (storehouses) of the temple.

I have myself visited the temple and never knew that it was so rich. And probably the richness will not be of any use to anyone, either. So, there's no point in reading more about the temple. That's why I do not link to any other page about these. Go do your work. Lotteries are never the safest bet.

NEW!! Kerala Schools Standard X NEW Textbooks, SCERT class 10 (SSLC New texts)

Here is the link to the new textbooks that are going to be issued in 2011 for Class X (class 10) of kerala state state syllabus, by SCERT.

Malayalam Medium Class X textbook

If you don't find what you need there, click here to go to ALL THE NEW TEXTBOOKS by SCERT

Recommended Reading Books for AIPMT (Mains and Prelims)

Hi, as an AIPMT aspirant on my own, I know which books to read so as to get what's required for getting through AIPMT and not anything more.

Apart from NCERT textbooks, if you're reading anything more (It's usually a waste to read more because the NCERT textbooks themselves provide everything that's required)  may be for bettering your understanding, then I recommend these:

Biology:
Campbell and Reece, Biology

Physics:
Halliday, Resnick, Walker, Fundamentals of Physics
and if you're more interested in physics like I was (and it proved useful to learn physics in detail, because 2011 AIPMT mains had IIT level questions in physics) you may also use Feynman Lectures in Physics (but that's a big book)

Chemistry:
I didn't really read anything outside NCERT textbook. But for organic, there is
Morrison and Boyd Organic Chemistry
For inorganic, try
Instant Notes in Inorganic Chemistry

(And I didn't *buy* any of these. You know what I did. Google is your friend)

Karnataka Schools DSERT Class 10 textbooks online

Hello class X kids from Karnataka, DSERT has provided your textbooks online. Currently only English medium textbooks are available. There's no kannada medium textbook, neither textbooks of class 9, class 8, class 7, class 6, etc.

For Class 10, all books including English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Sanskrit, Science, Social Science, Biology, Mathematics (maths), Urdu, Telugu and Tamil are available.

Click here to go to DSERT website for downloading textbooks of karnataka state syllabus class 10 online for free

Obtaining Tatkal Passport India (Kozhikode or Kannur)

Obtaining passport in tatkal option is not as difficult as people talk about it.
Unless you are a terrorist, you can easily get the passport by giving the necessary documents.

To begin with, anyone who is applying must be thorough with 2 websites.
1) passport.gov.in
2) the website of your regional office which can be found from passport.gov.in itself.
For example, kozhikode's site is http://passport.gov.in/kozhikode.html

The tatkal scheme

There are two ways to obtain tatkal passport.
1) Annexure I + Annexure F
2) Annexure I + 3 documents

I went for the second way.
Annexure I need to be obtained from a notary public. There're plenty of them. You don't have to worry about printing the annexure, etc. All of that will be done by the notary public. You just need to pay them and tell the details.

The originals of the 3 documents have to be shown at the passport office.

You need to take 3 photostat copies of each document and self attest them (I found in the net that self attesting means to write "This is a true copy of the original" and signing underneath. I actually wrote "self-attested" and put my signature. You could even try putting only your signature)

They give an option of 1000 + 1000 to get passport in 2 weeks. It seems like that option is not being given now (at least in kozhikkode office) and that the 1500 + 1000 option itself takes from 7-10 days (at least that's what happened in my case, because my holy adobe is far away from civilization)

Application

You should apply online. Even if you fill up the form offline, they'll make you do it online from just outside the passport office (kozhikode, i mean) (I'm not sure about this, I just saw nobody applying offline, and authorized people sitting outside and helping people convert offline application into online ones.)

While filling up the online form, almost all columns are self explanatory.
You can't use any initial.
If you have a name like Akshay S Dinesh (which you've been using since childhood every time) you will have to expand that S. In my case that was symoblic of my mom's name and required no extra proof (since my mom's name was already in my birth certificate)
Your dad's and mom's name need to be in full. But there's no need for the proof of those expansions.

After finishing online application take the printout. You will finally submit only 2 copies of the personal particulars form for each residence. So if you stayed only at 1 place throughout, you'll have to submit only the 2 copies that comes when your print out the online form (I actually took 2 extra copies reading that "to be submitted in duplicate" and those were complete waste)

Paste photos as directed in the form. Take 1 extra photo with you.

The ECNR status (Emigration Clearance Not Required) is available for many people including those who have passed matriculation. So if you've passed 10th standard, that's enough. And it's highly recommended that you obtain ECNR status if you're eligible in any manner for hassle free travel.

Checklist

These are the things I submitted.
The application form with 1 unattested photo pasted + 1 unattested photo extra
Two copies of personal particulars with 1+1 signed photos
3 copies of ration card
3 copies of bank pass book (first page and transactions page)
3 copies of birth certificate
3 copies of AISSE 10th standard pass certificate (mark list was more preferred)
original + 2 copies of the Annexure I (affidavit)
Cash!! INR 2500

Collate them and you're better off

The queue

There'll be about 100 people ahead of you in the queue unless you reach the office before the first bus arrives there. But that's not a problem because the token system is pretty good and there are enough counters to finish about 10 people in 20 minutes.

Port Forwarding BSNL VMC AN1020-21 Modem (Type WT) for Transmission

Transmission is a bittorrent client like utorrent, for linux.
It uses a default port 51413 to make connections.
You can go to Edit-->Preferences-->Network and look at the Port for Incoming Connections option.
Click Test port under it, and if it shows Port is Open, you have to do nothing.

If it shows Port is Closed, follows these instructions.
Note down the port number (51413 in this case, you can change it if you want, but not all ports are allowed)
Now, go to 192.168.1.1 in your browser. (this is your router's home page)
Enter username and password as admin
On the left pane, under the security tab, select Port Forwarding.
If it asks for password again, type admin as username and admin as password as earlier
Now, you have to add a port forwarding rule.
Click on the Add button

Select user-defined instead of pre-defined
Give some trivial name. I gave Transmission.
WAN interface, the default one. (pppoe_0_35)
Forward to internal host ip address:
Now this setting is what requires caution.
Bring up command prompt or terminal and type ifconfig or ipconfig and find inet address.
Mine was 192.168.1.2
Type that in.
Now in the protocol type select TCP
For External Packet Port Start, Port End and Internal Port Port Start, Port End,
for all 4 of them, type 51413 (the transmission port)
Now in the protocol type (second row) select UDP. And type 51413 for all the ports as we did for TCP.

Click apply and if everything goes well you'll have added two port forwarding rule.

Now, you may have to reboot the router. But if you want you can go to Transmission Preferences and click Test Port to see if it shows up Port is Open now without rebooting.
If it still doesn't try rebooting the router.
If it still doesn't show port is open, my friend, I can't help you.

(BTW, I set Use UPnP or NAT checked in transmission preferences)

Now the modem I bought for 2250 the Type-WT is special in that apart from the 4 LAN ports (provided by Type-B2) and the Wifi (provided by Type-W2) this one has VoIP support too.

The VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows people to make phone calls via the internet (at cheaper rates!!)
But BSNL, as of now, doesn't provide VoIP service. Only private companies are now giving this. And it requires additional equipment (a phone that can connect to internet) too.

That's all. If you want to be the proud owner of cutting edge technology, follow me and buy this one.

INOI 2011 Solutions

[Update on Jan 17, 2013: Some readers are reporting that the second solution is wrong. I cannot verify the same, but to be safe discretion is advised.]

Here are my solutions for the two INOI 2011 questions... (Indian National Olympiad in Informatics conducted by IARCS Indian Association for Research in Computing Science for Google's search :P)

The first question was about how many right angled triangles are possible with the given set of points and with sides parallel to x and y axes.

Arrays required: a 2*N array (xy[2][N])to store the coordinates. Two 10^4 long arrays (X[10000] and Y[10000] to store the number of times an x-coordinate and y-coordinate appears.
Input: Go into the loop. Get the coordinate and store it in the first array. Add 1 to X[x-coordinate], 1 to Y[y-coordinate]
The trick: Now, for every given point just multiply (X[x]-1) and (Y[y]-1)
This works because if you think of the points really as it is plotted in a graph, you'll see that for one point as the vertex with the adjacent sides perpendicular, there are as many triangles possible as the product of the remaining points left horizontal to it, and remaining points left vertical to it.
Add this for all points and do that %10000

The second question involving dynamic programming needs a solution to be constructed from one of the problems already discussed in online contest archive.
We store the marks in the array marks[N]
Now the best score at marks[0] is the same.
from marks[1] onwards, the best score is the maximum of (marks[1] alone),(best[i-1]+marks[1]),(best[i-1] dropping marks[i])
In the last case, when we drop marks[i], we must add one mark which we previously dropped to get the best mark.
Now, the trick in this is to store a best negative mark value for every i-1 so that if i is negative too, we can find dropping which is better. (where, by best negative, I mean the one closest to zero.. Because the one farthest from zero needs to be dropped.)
so we compare the best negative and marks[i] (obviously when marks[i] is negative) and keeps the one closest to zero, drops the other...

we must keep the count of K that is left. And we must also remember to restore K to maximum when we can best [i-1] is the same as marks[i] and they're both negative (or zero).

Both of the questions were particularly easy, if you thought like me. All the best for your results.
